Skye is situated off the north west coast of Scotland. To get onto the island you can either drive over the bridge from the mainland at Kyle of Lochalsh or catch the Caledonian MacBrayne ferry from Mallaig to Armadale.
Please note, if you are using SatNav from Fort William it will normally take you to Mallaig and the ferry. If you are wanting to come via the bridge please ignore and continue along A82 to Invergarry. If you are intending to catch the ferry please check before leaving Fort William that the ferry is running as it is approximately a 3 hour drive from Mallaig to the bridge.
Waternish Peninsula is situated in the north west corner of Skye. It will take approximately 1 1/2 hours to reach Waternish from either the Skye Bridge or the ferry terminal at Armadale.
Once across the Skye Bridge keep on A87 until you reach Sligachan. Turn left signposted Dunvegan A863. Drive for 21 miles. Take the right hand turn to A864 towards Portree (A850) for 1 mile (this road locally is known as the Dunvegan by-pass and is single track. Please give way to cars behind by pulling into the passing places). When you get to the “T” junction turn right signed Portree (A850) and drive for 2 miles until you see the sign for Waternish B886.
Turn left here and drive for approx. 4 miles passing breathtaking views across Loch Bay to the islands, until you come to a “T” junction. Turn right signposted Hallin, Geary & Trumpan. After about 1/2 mile you will see a road sign for Hallin. Continue to drive for another mile and you will see a phone box on the right hand side of the road adjacent to the wee free church. Directly opposite this phone box, on the other side of the road there are two white gate posts with a house sign (puffin and An Cala, eight) and a green post box with a number “8” on it. Turn left here and drive to the bottom of the track. There is parking at the bottom with space to turn round.
